Pool resurfacing or a pool remodel: which job gets you the pool you want?

Updated November 20265 minute read

Look at your pool for the signs below. They tell you which job to ask for.

Resurface or remodel?

Resurface when the shell and tile are sound and the pool just looks tired. Remodel when you don't like the shape, or you want more than a new surface. Walking around the pool tells you most of it.

What you see, and the job it points to

  • The surface feels rough Resurface. A new interior finish makes it smooth again.
  • Stains or a dull, faded finish Resurface. The finish is worn, and the shell is often fine.
  • Cracked or loose waterline tile Resurface with new tile, or a remodel if more of the tile is worn.
  • Worn or loose coping Resurface and replace the coping, or a remodel if the deck is changing too.
  • You dislike the shape, steps or depth Remodel. A new surface can't change the shape.
  • Old pump, heater or lights Remodel, or resurface and add the equipment at the same time.
  • You want a spa, a ledge or a water feature Remodel.
  • Leaks or a shell that moves Have the shell checked first. Fix that before either job.

What a pool bid should list

Two bids for the same pool can look nothing alike. Ask each contractor to spell these out:

For a resurface:

The finish by name, the tile and coping that are included, how the old surface comes off, and who restarts the pool and balances the water.

For a remodel:

Every change by name: shape, steps, tile, coping, deck, equipment and lights. Plus what is left out and who handles permits.

For both:

What happens if the crew finds a crack or a leak once the water is out, and how you approve a change in writing before it happens.

Questions about pool resurfacing and remodels

Getting bids? Read how to compare remodeling bids. Planning a kitchen too? Read kitchen or whole-home remodel.

Is resurfacing the same as replastering?

Close, but not quite. Plaster is just one kind of finish. Ask each contractor to name the finish: plaster, quartz or pebble.

Can I resurface now and remodel later?

Often yes. You may pay for the drain-down twice. Say so when you ask for bids.

Do I have to drain the pool?

Yes, for a new surface. Ask each contractor how the drain, restart and water balance are handled.

Who pulls the permits?

Ask each contractor. It depends on the job and your city.
